This wasn’t my originally intended post for today, but I believe that it’s worth sharing. Reducing or eradicating the stigma associated with mental health is necessary for many reasons. Namely, so that individuals that are suffering in silence will feel more empowered to seek the help that they deserve. Perhaps if more celebrities and well-known people in the public eye shared the challenges that they’re facing, greater emphasis and funding may be provided for those in need. It has taken me years to be able to admit to myself that I suffer from moderate anxiety and mild depression. Years!
I applaud anyone who finds the courage to say aloud, ” I’m not perfect” or “I’m struggling.” Or, “I’m dealing with something that leaves me raw and frightened, but I’m addressing it and I will not quit!” Vulnerability is frightening and liberating at the same time. I liken it to standing naked in front of a room full of strangers…. and how many of us would be willing to do that?
Courage comes in many forms and I hope to see many more stories like this in the near future.
